Cooking can turn our kitchens into a warm, damp environment which promotes mould growth and poses safety issues. To create a clean and safe workspace, it’s important for us to keep our kitchens dry.
A Simple Kitchen Drying Routine
The easiest way to keep your kitchen dry is to turn it into a habit. Each time you finish your work in the kitchen, follow this simple routine:
- Dry the stove and splashback
- Dry the benchtops
- Dry the sink area
This routine ensures that your kitchen is always dry in between uses.
Keeping your kitchen dry is easy when you use the right tools. Here are the two tools that I rely on to keep my kitchen dry:
- A squeegee. I find that using a squeegee is the fastest way to dry smooth surfaces, such as the splashback and benchtop. A quick swipe leaves these surfaces completely dry, and I like being able to push the water from the benchtop directly into the sink.
- A kitchen cloth. After using the squeegee, I use an absorbent cloth to dry any spots that I can’t reach with the squeegee, such as the kitchen tap.
Tip #2: Launder Your Kitchen Towels
To have an extra clean kitchen, you need to have clean, dry kitchen towels to work with. This means that you need to launder your kitchen towels regularly.
A Simple Kitchen Towel Washing Routine
Here’s a system that allows you to use a fresh set of kitchen towels every day while washing your kitchen towels twice a week. To implement this system, you’ll need five sets of kitchen towels.
- Every evening: Hang up your used kitchen towels to dry completely overnight. This prevents the kitchen towels from remaining damp between washes.
- Every morning: Put out a new set of kitchen towels and put the old set in a dedicated laundry basket.
- Every three or four days: Wash the kitchen towels in the washing machine. I prefer to launder my kitchen towels in a washing cycle separate from other laundry.
This simple routine makes it easy to start each day with a fresh set of kitchen towels.
Tip #3: Manage Your Food Storage Spaces
Food storage is a feature that distinguishes the kitchen from other rooms in your home. To keep your kitchen extra clean, you need to regularly clean your food storage spaces, such as your fridge, freezer, and pantry.
Clean Before Restocking
To keep your food storage spaces clean, align your cleaning schedule with your grocery shopping schedule. If you make a habit of cleaning your food storage spaces before you refill them with new groceries, you’ll always have clean homes for your food.
Tip #4: Ventilate Your Kitchen
Many of the tasks that we perform in our kitchens impact the air quality in our kitchens. Cooking on a gas stove, washing dishes, and mopping the kitchen floor are all examples of activities that can release pollutants into the air.
The solution to these issues is to air out our kitchens. In addition to improving air quality, airing out the kitchen also removes cooking aromas, creating a space that smells fresh and clean.
How to Ventilate Your Kitchen
It’s a good idea to ventilate your kitchen every day. In my home, I air out my kitchen every morning for at least 15 minutes. (For more information on ventilating your home, you can read my article on how to air out your home.)
In addition to the daily morning airing, I also ventilate my kitchen whenever I cook. Here are three things that I do during meal preparation:
- Turn on the range hood
- Turn on the ventilating fan
- Open the kitchen window
I find that the combination of these methods is the best way to keep my kitchen feeling clean and airy. After all, an extra clean kitchen doesn’t just look clean—it feels and smells clean too.
Tip #5: Look After Your Kitchen Appliances
To have an extra clean kitchen, you need to care for your kitchen appliances. To do this, make an inventory of your kitchen appliances, then create a plan for cleaning them. The first part of this task should require no more than a couple of minutes, while the latter part can be easily accomplished by referencing the manuals for each of your appliances.
Take Inventory of Your Appliances
Remember to account for all the appliances in your kitchen. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Small appliances such as kettles, toasters, and rice cookers.
- Large appliances such as fridges, stoves, and ovens.
- Ventilating appliances such as range hoods and ventilating fans.
Extract Useful Information
Sometimes the hardest part of cleaning kitchen appliances is not the act of cleaning itself, but rather the act of dragging out and poring over appliance manuals. To save yourself the need to repeatedly reference clunky manuals, extract the information you need and store it in an easily accessible document.
Tip #6: Create a Rubbish Routine
If you want to create an extra clean kitchen, it’s useful to create a rubbish routine.
A Simple Rubbish Routine
Here are some easy-to-follow guidelines to help you create a functional rubbish routine in your home:
- Collect food scraps in a bowl before transferring them to the rubbish bin. I always avoid doing kitchen work over an open rubbish bin. It is safer and tidier to first collect all my food scraps—such as vegetable peels, eggshells, and meat trimmings—in a large bowl, then transfer them together to the rubbish bin.
- Empty the rubbish bin every evening. As part of my evening routine, I take out the rubbish every day—even if the rubbish bin isn’t full. This is an important part of preventing unpleasant smells in the kitchen.
- Empty the rubbish bin as soon as it is full. An overflowing rubbish bin is unsanitary and unusable. On days where the rubbish bin fills up early, do an extra rubbish run to keep your rubbish bin functional for the rest of the day.
- Keep your rubbish bin clean. After taking out the rubbish each evening, I give my empty rubbish bin a quick wipe across the top, sides, bottom and interior. It takes seconds and keeps the rubbish bin pristine.
Creating an Extra Clean Kitchen
What is the difference between a clean kitchen and an extra clean kitchen? A clean kitchen enables you to produce a meal once, but lacks repeatable systems that allow you to rapidly restore the kitchen to its pristine state. In contrast, an extra clean kitchen enables you to produce a meal and reset the kitchen, so you can produce another meal, and another, and another.
